Take It For A Spin

#BrassTrains #ModelBuilder As we progress through the construction of the tank car, we will branch off on different paths to test new ideas along the way. After experimentation creating a tank car end, otherwise known as the tank heads, we take it a step further. We put a spin on the brass to not only knock off the high spots of the hammered brass but also to use a heavy sand paper with a light touch to put concentric circles as though machined. Then we put it to the buffing wheel to polish it for further analysis. By further analysis I mean to view it and think about it. Also possibly doing a paint primer test coat to preview what it might look like after final assembly and painting. Find the key decision points whether to utilize the part or take another tack in fabricating for the component assembly.

Is this extra work going to make a difference in the character and detail of the model?

Why do this extra work?

Well sometimes new ideas come to light or we want to do an exercise like this to test an idea that may have been conceived from building another model. New ideas such as maybe casting the tank car ends in lead to add weight or balance to the car. Machining a lead or brass casting would look more perfect as though it just rolled off of the manufacturers shop floor. Recall that manufacturers always look to minimize cost and find better ways to build cars to maximize profits. In model building we may emulate that notion to find ways to minimize the amount of sweat that goes into building the model and yet produce the most desired result. This can only add more value to your brass collection over time.
