#SafetyFirst Safety First

In this video we want to stress the importance of safety no matter if you are in the workshop building brass models or working in other environments such as found in schools be it a science lab or at work where hazards might exist. First, we briefly talk a little history around safety. Believe it or not the railroads and in particular the Chicago & North Western recognized the need and advantages of safety. Efforts to develop safe work environments not only became standards in the railroad industry but also across other industries in general. Using Personal Protective Equipment is highly recommended and using common sense in evaluating potential safety issues. It is never to early to start teaching youngsters and new students to the hobby about safety. Below is a reminder regarding electricity.

LOW VOLTAGE DOES NOT MEAN LOW HAZARD

The National Safety Council estimates that nearly 300 people die in the United States each year from electric shocks on 120V or 277V circuits. Death occurs when voltage pushes electrons through the human body, particularly the heart. An electric shock from as little as 50VAC for as little as 1 sec can disrupt the heart's rhythm, causing death in a matter of minutes. The severity of electric shock depends on the current flowing through the body.

Electric sensation Tingle sensation occurs at about 0.25mA to 1mA

Uncomfortable sensation Current greater than 1mA to 2mA is very uncomfortable

Maximum let-go level (maximum value of electric current through the body of a person at which that person can release himself or herself) The maximum let-go threshold level is about 15mA

Fibrillation level This is a function of current over time. For example, you will get fibrillation with 500mA over 0.2 sec or 75mA over 0.5 sec
