#ModelProjects Concepts, Mockups & Options

In this video we cover the following topics:

1. What was learned from the Tank Car R&D? 2. Developing Your Options 3. Tank Car Cylinder Jig 4. Mockups 5. Car body Under Frames

Based on the research into the CGW tank car as documented by American Car & Foundry, we evaluate a few observations and relate how that develops our thinking toward modeling the car. This leads us into considering various options or pathways for fabrication and assembly techniques. Options are important because it give us the opportunity to determine the process of least resistance that will give us the best result at each step in building the model.

This brings us to another enabling opportunity and that is building a cylinder jig for easy assembly of the tank but also for possible fine detail required. Detail does not always come after your main structure components are assembled. In this case we are talking about the weld lines on the surface of the tank. There are many options available with a jib like this such as scribing line work, drilling holes or even as a excellent method of holding the model while working on it.

Rather than rushing head long into assembly I like to do mock ups. Mockups help visualize what the final component assembly might look like. It also gives us the ability to access the interface between components such as the tank and the tank car frame. Mockups also allows us to check for measurements and to make sure our scaling is as good as we can achieve.

Finally, we are going to discuss a number of car frames from triple hoppers, air slide hoppers, tank car sub-sills and the interchange caboose frame infrastructure.
